Senvelgo: risk of ketoacid diabetes associated with the use of the veterinary medicine

SENVELGO® (velagliflozin) 15 mg/ml - oral solution for cats - has been granted a marketing authorisation by the European Commission in November 2023. At the request of the European Medicines Agency and, for France, the National agency for veterinary medicinal products, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica GmbH disseminates information on the occurrence of serious adverse reactions and how to prevent them.

The French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products celebrates its 30th anniversary

The French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV) was created in 1994. Part of ANSES, it monitors the efficacy of the veterinary medicinal products used in France and ensures they are environmentally friendly and safe for animal and human health. The ANMV’s missions and importance on the French and European scenes have changed significantly over the past 30 years. Below, Franck Fourès, Director of the ANMV, looks back at its history and discusses the major challenges that lie ahead.

Procedures for declaring discontinuations or abandonments of marketing authorisations for veterinary medicinal products in France

Paragraph 13 of Article 58 of European Regulation 2019/06 states that the marketing authorisation holder must inform the competent authorities in advance of any cessation of marketing of a veterinary medicinal product, of the reasons justifying it and of any action he intends to take.

Publication of the "Guidance to applicants"

The European Commission published the Guidance to Applicants on 23 February 2024. This guide replaces the "Notice to Applicants volume 6A chapter 1" which no longer has a regulatory basis in the Veterinary Medicinal Products Regulation.

Procedures for reporting veterinary medicinal product shortages

The issue of medicinal products supply shortages is a major topic for both animal and human health. In veterinary medicine, the holders or their representative (responsible for placing on the market) are obliged to report to Anses any risk of shortage of a veterinary medicinal product which could lead to a risk to human health, animal health or animal welfare.

Anses participates in EU4Health Joint Action EU4H11

EU4H11 (Joint Action on quality of medicines and implementation of the pharmaceutical legislation/strategy) is part of the EU4Health programme funded by the European Commission. The total budget of this Joint Action amounts to more than 3 million EUR, 80% of the costs will be co-financed by the European Commission. The project aims at strengthening capacities of EU/EEA GMP/GDP inspectorates in the global vision of mutual reliance of inspection data to better ensure quality of medicinal products and protection of Public Health.

Determination of the annual coefficient for the revaluation of taxes

As part of its tasks relating to the assessment and risk management of veterinary medicinal products, ANSES collects taxes and fees. Taxes, with the exception of the annual tax indexed to the turnover of veterinary medicinal products, are revalued annually.

Antimicrobial resistance in animal health: 2023 review

ANSES’s work contributes to the fight against antimicrobial resistance. To mark World Antibiotic Awareness Week, the Agency is publishing the data collected in 2022 from: the monitoring of sales of veterinary medicinal products containing antimicrobials the French surveillance network for antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria of animal origin (Resapath) the European scheme for monitoring antimicrobial resistance in the food chain The Agency is also offering another look at its expert appraisal work on the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from animals to humans.

Head lice treatments: never use products for animals on children

On 2 October 2023, ANSES received a report involving the case of a young girl who was hospitalised in serious condition following the use of insecticides intended for treating parasites in cattle. Every year, the Agency is informed of cases where antiparasitics intended for animals are used to treat head lice in children. It reiterates that antiparasitic treatments for animals should never be used on human beings, especially children.
